Chapter 18
As they pulled into the clearing Todd asked the driver to stop and stepped from the car. Todd held out his hand for Blair to get out with him. She took it, exiting the car, uncertain what he was up to. Todd instructed the driver to take the kids to the side entrance. He stood with his arms encircling Blair, facing the house, and watching the setting sun cast a rosy glow down on Dragonheart. “A short while ago, I stood right here and you told me that our house was proof of my love for you.”
“Todd, we haven’t been home in ages, what are you talking about?”
“It’s hard to explain. I think I was dying and you brought me here. There was this glow surrounding the house and the air was warm and welcoming. The house seemed to be inviting me into its safe arms. Then you spoke two little words. For one brief moment, I lost sight of you, but I knew I could find you again, all I had to do was listen.” Todd paused and hugged her close, knowing this time she wasn’t disappearing. “Then I heard you. Thank you.”
“Todd, what were the words?”
“Come home.” He said it softly, whispering it in her ear and he gently kissed her cheek.
Blair felt a tear drop on her cheek. She didn’t understand everything he had gone through, but somehow her love for him had pulled him back to them, and she was thankful.
She turned in his arms, “Welcome home, Todd.” The passion of his sudden kiss threatened to overwhelm, but she regained her control and eased back bringing the kiss to a close before she fainted. Wiping her lipstick off his lips, she grabbed his hand and said, “Let’s go in before the kids wreck the place.” Laughing, she pulled him toward the front door and Todd followed, this time holding tightly to her hand.
They walked through the front door just in time to see Jack and Sam sliding down one banister while Hope and Starr slid down the other.
“What the hell?”
At the sound of Todd’s voice, the giggles stopped and all eyes turned to him.
“You guys started without me and that is so unfair.” They all watched astonished as he dashed upstairs and flung a leg over the rail. Sam and Jack yelped and jumped off knowing he was headed their way. Before Starr and Hope had even gotten clear, Starr watched as her mom followed suit and came down their side. Todd rode down like a pro, but Blair discovered there was a certain technique needed for a smooth ride and after one go, she decided to just watch from the bottom. After several more trips, Blair called a halt because her heart couldn’t take anymore. It had been more unnerving and precarious than she had thought it would be, and the thought of one or more of them falling was just too much. “Alright, enough. There’s still unpacking to do and we need to get some dinner.” She shushed their groans and they all headed up to their rooms.
Todd moved into the living room and put on some music and got a couple of drinks. Handing her one, he grinned. “Here, you look like you could use a stiff one. I’ll tell them the banisters are off-limits unless I’m around. I don’t want them hurt either.” He worked to keep from smiling even more when Blair took a big gulp and almost choked. “I’m sorry. It was my design, I always wanted a sliding banister.
Blair looked at him. “Are you serious?”
“Yeah!” he laughed at her expression. “Listen, Peter was the last one to believe in fun.” The look of disbelief on her face was too much. “Okay, I’m lying, you know why I designed the banisters that way. Sliding down them is just an added bonus, I know it scares you, so no more sliding.” He reached and cupped her face, “I just want you happy.”
After the excitement of finally being home wore off, Starr took Hope and headed out to find James. Jack and Sam retired to their suite to play games. Todd took Blair’s hand and walked out to the back terrace, looking down on Llanview. “It’s chillier than I thought, stay here, I’ll be right back.” Todd ducked back inside and grabbed the throw lying across the couch. “Come here,” he held opened his arms. She walked into them and leaned against him as he wrapped the throw around them both.
“Hmm, cozy.” She hugged his arms around her tighter. “You realize this really isn’t a good idea. You have been living the better part of the last six months down south. The doctors would probably read you the riot act.”
“I’m fine, Blair. You were there, I got a clean bill of health.” He could tell she wanted to say more, but he squeezed her. “It’s time to get back on track. I need to petition the courts and get my name back. The Sun is under attack by persons unknown. This is where we belong.”
“I know you’re right, but I’m worried. This attack, why now?”
“The Sun is vulnerable. With Jake dead, no one’s been running things. Someone is making an end-run, hoping to get past my blockers. It’s got to stop.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Find out how they’re doing this. I was under the impression that Jake and I were the only stockholders. I bought my shares out from under Carlo, but now I’m wondering if Jake only thought he had control of his shares.” Todd rubbed her arms and realized she was shivering. “Let’s go back inside, you’re cold.”
“I’m not shivering because I’m cold. I’m scared, wondering what else Hesser and his cohorts did to Jake and us.”
“I need to talk to Tea. Maybe she can find something in Jake’s papers. It’s possible he signed something giving them his shares. He might not have known.”
“Todd, if he did, then what?”
“Then we’ve got a problem. Let’s not talk about it, now. It’s getting colder.” He felt a chill, his gut tightened and there it was. That feeling, like being wrapped up in ice; so cold it burned.
“What do you want?”
“You know what I want. I want out. You need to keep your focus. She’ll bring you down, she makes you weak.”
“No! You make me weak. Go away!”
“You’re a fool. She almost destroyed you before.”
“Shut up!” He didn’t realize he had spoken aloud until he felt Blair turn in his arms.
“Todd, what is it?”
He looked bleakly at her. “I don’t know if I can keep it contained. It goads me.”
It only took a second to figure out what he was referring to; his cold anger, or the way Todd saw it, his demon. “Come with me.” She led him back in. She knew Starr had returned home and took him upstairs to Starr’s room. Together, they watched Starr put Hope down for the night. She saw his face soften, and the tension leave his body as Hope called him into the room for a goodnight kiss.
“Goodnight, Dragon! I love you more than peaches.” Todd laughed and Blair sighed with relief.
“Let’s see you beat that.”

Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 17
Chapter 17
He woke to the sounds of Blair in the shower. Picturing her standing there lathered up and letting the water flow down her was hard to resist.
“Behave yourself, you almost did yourself in last night. You don’t need to ravage her 24/7.”
“Speak for yourself, Samuel. I quite like the idea.” Todd leaned back against his pillows, his arm under his head. “She’s hard to resist, that toned body, those gorgeous lips. Admit it, you’d love to be in there helping her wash. Stroking those fine muscles, you with your painter’s eye and touch. You want her as much as I do.” He was turning himself on thinking about her. “Damn, I’m nuts sitting here talking to you.” Todd hopped out of bed and headed to the bathroom. He opened the stall door and stood there admiring her lithe body. She was about to shampoo her hair.
Blair turned at the sound of the door and saw Todd staring openly at her. He stepped in and took the shampoo bottle from her and put some in his hand.
“Turn around Blair,” his voice husky. She tingled with anticipation as she turned.
Todd began to slowly work the foam into her strands, the silky texture of her hair became mixed with the scent of orange blossoms and other tantalizing smells. He moved closer letting her feel how excited he was. Blair moaned and would have gotten closer, but he held her away as he finished her hair, then he turned her back to face him. He pulled her into his arms. “Go ahead, lean back and rinse, I’ve got you.”
Blair was already breathless and the action of leaning back in his arms moved her hips nearer to his. He was so ready for her, and she ground her hips against him in response. Water cascaded down her back rinsing her hair, but Blair had only one thought, she squirmed closer, moaning, letting him know he was driving her crazy.
Todd knew she was beside herself, but he waited until he was sure her hair was free of the suds. She continued to writhe against him pleading. He lifted her and entered as she wrapped her legs around his waist.
Blair gasped and sighed as he settled her. Now firmly secure around him, she relished how he filled her and she began her ride. His mouth played along her neck and every so often she felt a delicious little nip. It was heady and her belly and groin rippled in reply.
Todd nuzzled her neck and felt every quiver and movement as she rode him. She was heavenly to touch, her skin was like finely woven silk, smooth and slippery. She glistened with moisture, the droplets sparkled reflecting the overhead light. His lips captured those droplets, tasting her as she shivered in delight. The moment was upon them, he gyrated unable to stop, letting loose with a cry of pleasure. Their shouts mingled with the sound of the water splashing and then he let her down, clasped her face, and tenderly kissed her pliable lips.
Blair wound her fingers into his hair kissing him, feeling his strong muscular body rubbing hers, they were so close she could feel his heart beating.
Todd raised his head looking at her. “Hi, Blair.”
“Hi.”
“How’s your morning going so far? I’ve got to tell you, mine’s pretty good right now,” he said, grinning.
Blair laughed and hugged him. “Mine’s been downright spectacular so far.”
“Great but look, I’m turning into a prune so what say we get out of here?”
“Whoa mister, you need to finish with your shower, wrinkles or no wrinkles. I suggest you make it quick.” She laughed and stepped away and out the door before he could stop her.
Todd laughed and made quick work of his shower, anxious to get back to his wife.
Blair was putting on her makeup when he strolled out of the bathroom in just a towel. He was great to look at. His hair was swept back and glistening, still wet from washing. She watched his chest muscles move making note of the brief discomfort he felt as he slipped on his shirt. He slipped into his shorts and grabbed his slacks.
“See anything you like?”
Blair jumped realizing he was talking to her. “Everything,” she smiled then got serious. “I also saw you twinge a moment ago. Maybe we should slow down a little bit. You’re still recuperating.”
“It’s nothing, a few sore muscles. Where you’re concerned, I’ll never ease up. If something makes you happy, that’s all it takes for me.” He strode over and offered his hand. “Let’s go eat, I’m starving.”

Todd was on his laptop when the phone rang.
“Hello”
“So it’s true, you’re back in the land of the living.”
“McBain, nice to hear your voice too. I hope you have some good news for me.”
“I think it’s what you’ve been waiting for. Interpol just contacted Bo and told him the contract against Samuel has been withdrawn. Looks like somebody decided to cut their losses.”
“Possibly...”
“That’s kind of cryptic. I thought you’d be overjoyed.”
“Let’s just say I think something else is in the works now. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad no one’s gunning for me. Blair and the family will be glad to hear we can get back to Llanview.”
There was silence on the other end and then John said. “Okay, you don’t feel like sharing right at the moment. If I were to hazard a guess, would this something else have to do with the man on the ship.”
“Score one for the detective.”
“Todd, what’s going on?”
“I received an unexpected call just before leaving the hospital yesterday. He didn’t like my gift to him I guess.”
“I know you scored a hit, Todd, we found the blood. You’re telling me he’s making it personal.”
“As personal as it gets, John.”
“So what are you doing about it?"
“Me, I’m biding my time. I’ve been trying to find out where his call came from. Hold on a minute. Something just came up on my laptop.” Todd opened the message and frowned. “John, someone’s after The Sun. Tell Bo, we’ll be coming home soon. I’ve got to go.” Todd stood up, he hugged himself across his chest. Damn it! Who are you and just what are you planning?

Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 16
Chapter 16
The call from Daimler left his legs steady when he exited the car and walked into the lobby of the hotel. Blair rushed to meet him. The way her body molded to his was sending all sorts of erotic notions to his brain and his body responded. He didn’t even mind that they were embracing in public. He was in the middle of kissing her thoroughly when Starr cleared her throat.
“You two might want to take that somewhere more private.” Starr smiled when they both parted. Todd kept his hold on Blair’s waist, his hand continuing to caress the toned waist underneath his fingers, and started walking to the elevator. As they passed an older couple they overheard them talking. “Young kids just don’t have any sense of propriety. In my day, that kind of display was frowned on."
Todd could feel Blair trying to contain herself. Her body trembling. He looked to see if she was angry at the remark, and saw her pressing her lips together and the hint of a smile beginning to escape. They entered the elevator. As soon as the doors closed, she burst out laughing, along with Starr. Perplexed at their reaction, he suddenly realized the absurdity of the overheard remark. He started chuckling, then just let it out, laughing so hard tears began forming and he felt a little light-headed from it. Hope and Sam started laughing because the adults were. Todd, Blair, and Starr looked at the kids and it set them all off again. They were still going at it when they got off on the penthouse floor. Todd tried to get his composure back, still grinning as they neared the penthouse. Upon entering the suite, Todd was brought up short by Addie’s visitor.
“This is a surprise. Who’s holding down the fort at The Herald? I didn’t think you ever left that place at this time of day, Amos.”
“I’m just visiting with a friend. We became quite chummy when we were waiting to see if you were going to survive the night you got shot.” Amos looked at Addie and smiled.
Todd caught Addie’s eyes and raised his eyebrows. She actually blushed and dropped her eyes. “Why you old coot, she’s sweet on you,” thought Todd, taking a closer harder look at his editor. Didn’t Amos already have a girl? Better not be stepping out around Addie. He liked Amos and he was a good friend, but Addie was family.
“Addie told me you were coming home today and I wanted to give you some news. It appears that your articles have captured the nation’s attention. It seems states all over are beginning to enact laws to fight the problem. That was an impressive series of stories Thomas, and I’m hoping you plan on sticking around and writing more.”
Todd looked at Blair and back to Amos. “I’m not sure how much longer we’ll be here Amos. I appreciate the offer, but something else has come up that will probably require us to leave soon.” Blair gave him a puzzled look. “I’ll explain later,” he responded to her and turned back to Amos. “That being said, I want you to know I’m grateful you let me run with the story. I hope you can stay a little longer, maybe we could have a little chat. Sit, continue your talk with Addie, I just need to talk to Blair in private for a moment.” He grabbed her hand and led her to their bedroom.
“Todd, I know it’s been a while, but we can’t do it right now, not with Amos out there in the living room,” Blair says pulling her hand free.
Todd looks at Blair flabbergasted. ”No! That’s not why I wanted time alone. I wanted to tell you I got a call from Gregor right before leaving my room. Blair, he’s not finished with us.”
“Oh God, what did he say?”
Todd walked to their bed and sat down. He sat her down next to him. “He wanted me to know he felt our game had only been derailed and that it was back on track since I survived. I’m pretty sure he’s still in The States.”
“What is it with you two? Why can’t you both agree to leave each other alone?”
“It’s not going to happen, Blair. I damaged his little enterprise and I hurt him. He’s got partners to answer to. I cost him a lot, he can’t let that slide. Don’t worry I’ll handle him.” You threw down, Gregor, now get ready for my response.
Blair looked into his eyes and saw the fire in them. He was actually looking forward to taking on Daimler. “You really want this don’t you?”
“Hell, yeah I do! He threatened to take you away from me permanently, and I thought he had. Do you have any idea what that did to me?”
Blair heard the fear in Todd’s voice. “But I’m fine, he didn’t succeed. If I asked you to leave this alone, would you do it?”
Todd looked her square in the eyes. “No. It’s not an option. He’s already made the first move. I’ve playing catch up.”
“But he’s dangerous.”
“So am I.” The tone of his voice was positively frigid, even his posture changed. She felt she was staring into the eyes of an ice statue. Blair recognized him and felt a chill go down her spine. She hadn’t seen this Todd since that night in the warehouse. She had known what he was capable of when she had married him and had even faced him one time herself. He had come so close to raping her, but at the last minute, he had stopped himself. God help Daimler if this Todd faced him.
Todd noticed that Blair got quiet and realized he had dropped his guard for a minute. He got off the bed and put a little space between them. He closed his eyes, striving to smother the icy anger that had washed over him like a wave. “I’m sorry Blair, I didn’t mean to scare you.”
Blair moved to stand behind him and embraced him. “Don’t ever do that. I’m not scared of you. I know exactly what you’re capable of and I know the strength it takes to harness that anger.” she turned him to face her. “Todd, you hide that part of you extremely well and I think it scares you more than me. I saw you nearly take Sid’s head off and I witnessed you almost kill Carlo, but both times you stopped yourself. I believe with all my heart that you’ll never again let it take you over.” She took his face in her hands. “You’ll need everything at your disposal to fight Daimler, so use it. Remember, you’re in charge.” His lips found hers, and this time no prying eyes were watching.
A little while later Amos and Todd walked out on the terrace to have their chat.
“You had us all worried that night. What on earth were you thinking to go to the docks handicapped the way you were?”
“I had a hunch the ringleader might still be in town. I figured if I let myself be caught, I’d get to meet him. It worked.”
“So you met this guy, the head honcho. Who is he?”
“I can’t tell you, Amos. I have nothing to tie him to the slave-ring. Things got worse shortly after I met him. Somehow he had Blair and her family. I was helpless.” Todd paused for a moment. “Amos, he taunted me and said that he had plenty of contacts who knew how to school and treat someone like Blair. He was crowing when he said he could make money off of her, Cassie and Addie.”
The anguish and frustration that Tom must have felt were evident to Amos as he saw him take a stiff gulp of his drink and heard the catch in his voice. “Tom, I’m sorry, that had to be rough.”
Todd shook his head, and took a deep breath, clearing the memory. “That’s alright Amos. It’s over. When he said those things, I went ballistic and attacked him. I knew if I got to John, I could save Blair. Unfortunately, I didn’t see the shooter, and as they say, the rest is history.”
“So you don’t know what happened to the guy after you attacked him?”
“I know he didn’t get caught and I know my shooter died.”
Amos studied his friend, his reporter’s instincts told him there was something Thomas wasn’t saying. He watched Thomas move to the rail. “Are you going to leave it at that?”
Todd’s hands gripped the rail tightly. “Would you?”
“If someone had threatened my family in that way, I’d want him dead. He didn’t die on that boat, so I’m guessing you’re not done with him.”
“You’d be right, but this is now personal, even more than you realize, Amos”
“Tom, it’s obvious this guy’s got a lot of pull and the funds to stay out of reach of the law. How are you going to find him?”
“I’ve got my own sources, Amos. I’ll find him.” Todd’s voice had gotten soft but ominous, his posture changed as he stiffened with suppressed anger.
Amos could see, by the vein pulsing in Tom’s neck and the way his hands were strangling the rail, that nothing was going stop the young reporter from finding the man. “Just promise me you won’t do anything stupid, good investigative reporters are hard to come by.”
At his words, Todd relaxed and turned back to Amos with a grin. “Is that your way of saying you’ll miss me?”
“Damn straight, your stories are great for circulation.”
“You wound me, Amos. That’s all I am, good copy?” Todd gripped his heart in mock pain and chuckled. He was grateful for the banter he wanted some space from Daimler for the rest of the night.
“Well sure, you didn’t think it was your sparkling personality, did you?”
Todd couldn’t help laughing. “Good one Amos.” It was true, no one could ever accuse him of that. Still smiling, Todd changed the subject. “So what’s going on with you and my mother-in-law?”
Amos was startled by the question, almost choking on his drink., “I find her a charming woman and from what I got from our conversations, she’s pretty fond of you.”
“You didn’t really answer me. How long have you been seeing her socially? I’m not blind, there’s more going on than just friendship.”
Amos stared hard at Tom. “Why the interrogation?’
“Just curious. I seem to remember another lady friend of yours helping us out recently. Addie just seems taken with you. “
“The lady friend you're talking about is just that, a friend. Not that it’s any of your business. I like Addie. We enjoy each other’s company. That’s all I’m saying on the matter “
Todd nodded in acceptance, letting go of the thought of the previous girlfriend nonsense. “You’re right Amos. It really isn’t any of my business. I guess I’m just being overprotective right now after recent events. I’m pretty fond of her too. I just don’t want her hurt.” He looked at Amos. “You understand right?”
“I understand Tom”
Blair and Addie came out on the terrace and interrupted. “Okay chat’s over, we’re hungry. Todd, you just got home, so I say we order up from room service. Amos, please stay. I’d like to hear more about the reactions to Tom’s articles.”
It was late when Amos took his leave. Todd was worn out but happy to just be sitting beside Blair. They were enjoying one final drink on the terrace. The view was beautiful, lights from the neighboring buildings, and the ones between the hotel and the ocean looked liked diamonds against the dark night. A mild breeze was blowing in from the ocean, the rustling curtains were the only sound heard. The overall stillness of the night wrapped around them.
Blair was being held gently in Todd’s arms and she wrapped them tighter around her. It had only been a short while ago, that Todd had been unresponsive to anything. “Todd, do you remember anything about the time you were in the coma?”
Todd didn’t answer her at first. He remembered waking up from that strange dream he had been having about Blair and their park bench. He also recalled a night when he overheard C.J. and Lily but beyond those few things, nothing was clear. “It’s all pretty foggy. I get these flashes, but I can’t grasp them. The more I try, the more I get this feeling of dread. Whatever I was thinking or dreaming, is something I don’t want to relive.”
Todd tilted Blair’s face up to his. “This is something I do remember. You were the one who brought me home. I know I’ve said this before, with you it just gets easier. I love you.”
Blair ran her fingers over his scars and down his jaw. It was a strong jaw on a strong man. He was her man and the father of her children. “You are all I want. We’re strong together Todd, and our enemies need to beware.” Whispering in her breathy manner, “That includes my so-called father.” She stood up and held out her hand. “Let’s go to bed.”
His breath caught as an image of her all in white with her hand outstretched popped into his head. A wave of warmth seemed to radiate from her and for a moment she seemed surrounded by a soft light. He reached to take her hand and felt that warmth encompass him. The aura around her faded and he stared in wonder at her. “You take my breath away.” He led her to their bed. With gentle hands, he removed her robe watching the silk fall gracefully to the floor and pool at her feet. He slid his hands slowly up her arms ending at her beautiful neck. They captured her face and his thumbs rubbed against her lower lip and his fingers traced her expressive eyes. She closed them and he felt her quiver under his touch.
Even with her eyes closed, Blair’s hands were doing their own exploring as she released his robe from his broad shoulders letting it fall to mingle with hers. With every stroke of his fingers, the tremor deep within was growing and her breath was coming faster. He suddenly lifted her and lay her on the bed, working his hand ever lower on her body as his lips suckled and teased her nipples. Blair arched in pleasure, aching for more. There had been nights when she had gone to sleep crying, afraid he was never coming home. She couldn’t stop her tears from falling and Todd suddenly noticed them. He stopped, confused, “Blair what is it?”
“Don’t stop, I just missed this. I thought I would never be this happy again. Please, I need the touch of your hands on my body.” Her eyes were sparkling with more unshed tears. “Only you make me feel this alive.”
Responding to her plea, Todd leaned in and took her generous mouth. His hands and tongue continued their exploration, as her moans of pleasure increased. When her cries escalated, his body reacted in kind. His own breathing became frenzied, he felt intoxicated. She was insatiable, finally turning the tables on him and taking control; equally intent on making sure Todd was as satisfied as she was. When he could no longer stand it, his body demanding release, he flipped her onto her back and slipped into her like a glove as she tightened around him, slick and ready. They moved together, her pulsating around him in counter beat to his movement until the final note climaxed; then incredible silence, only their breathing heard. He dropped beside her on the bed finding her hand, feeling her warmth, and felt it flow from her to him. He raised her hand to his lips. In the barest whisper, he said. “You are my home,” kissed it, and fell asleep.
Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 15
Chapter 15
He relaxed back into his chair and reached for his aged cognac. He couldn’t stop the twinge of pain coming from his left shoulder, having underestimated Todd Manning again. His thoughts went back to that last moment on the ship.
The blow had come out of nowhere and had caught him completely by surprise. He looked down in shock as the realization hit home that Manning’s cane was buried deep in his shoulder. Stunned he watched as Manning left the room. As the pain began to register, he heard the gunshots and reached for the hidden panel. He made it into the passageway letting the panel shut behind him, then he took stock of the injury. How on earth had Manning found enough force to push a cane into him? Gregor pulled the cane free and stared in amazement at the blade protruding from the end. “Clever Manning. I never suspected this.” He dropped the cane and grabbed his handkerchief stuffing it into the wound to stop the bleeding.
Gregor put pressure on his wound and made his way down the stairs to the waiting launch. The gunfire had ceased, but it was obvious Manning had brought some help. Sid should have been on the lookout for strangers on the dock. That obsession to get “Tom” had clouded his mind and given Sid tunnel vision, and now Gregor found himself on the run and wounded because of it. He would get Sid if the cops didn’t.
His shoulder was still bleeding profusely. He spoke to the captain. “Get me over to the Chinatown dock.” It took about fifteen minutes to make the trip, but the captain insisted on his payment before docking. Gregor cursed as he fumbled to get his wallet. If he hadn’t been in such pain, he would have wiped the smug look off the captain’s face. He paid the man and left the boat. It was a short walk to Uchin’s establishment. He pushed open the door and entered, heading straight to Uchin’s office. His partner’s bodyguards were standing outside the door, but gave way and opened the door when they spotted him.
“Uchin, get me a doctor!”
Uchin had spun around from his computer as soon as he heard the door, but he hadn’t been prepared for the sight in front of him. “What the hell, Gregor,” he nodded to one of his guards and offered Gregor a seat. The guard had standing orders and a doctor would be there quickly. “Who?” he looked at Gregor.
“My damn son-in-law. He took me by surprise.”
Uchin leaned against his desk and pulled a silk handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to Gregor. “I thought he had disappeared. What’s he doing here?”
Gregor took the cloth and stuffed it against the now soaked one at his shoulder. “Hell, he’s the guy who caused the raid. I just found out. To top everything else the man is blind. I thought I had him dead to rights. But he proved to be more resourceful than anticipated.” Gregor indicated his shoulder.
“Where is he now?”
“Dead, I hope. Gunfire broke out as he left my office. I’m guessing Sid and his pals might have gotten him. I chose to get out of there. By the way, your launch captain needs a lesson, take care of it.”
Uchin was used to Gregor giving orders and knew it was easier to give in to his demands then bother asking why. He walked around to his desk and pushed a button. The second guard entered. “The launch captain forgot the rules, teach him,” he watched his guard leave. “Do I need to worry about the police showing up here soon.”
“I left in the middle of the firefight. I don’t think the police are aware a launch left the ship.”
The first guard returned with an older Asian gentleman who took one look at Gregor and went to work.
“Anything else I can do for you, Gregor?”
“I need a place to lie low till this heals.”
“Consider this humble establishment your temporary home, although I’m afraid it won’t be up to your usual standards.”
Gregor nodded, silently he agreed with Uchin’s assessment of his restaurant. Uchin was a minimalist and Gregor was fond of opulence. He would suffer the indignity having to remain here, until sufficiently able to remove himself to one of his more accommodating homes.
He had hated Uchin’s establishment. Smells of stale smoke and cheap perfume battled with grease and sweat from the restaurant below and permeated Uchin’s apartment. The noise level from the gambling room had been non-stop. After a week there, he had reeked. He had spent that week carefully moving his money around, staying one step ahead of his corporation investors. By week's end, every bit of his money had been secreted away and the Corporation wouldn’t discover the loss until he was damn ready. The president of the company had initiated the investigation and had no idea everything was going to lead right back to him. “Poor slob, he’ll never know what hits him.” Gregor’s scapegoat would take the fall at the corporation while his hands remained squeaky clean. With his money secure, the only thing remaining was getting well enough to leave. Uchin’s doctor finally gave the okay and Gregor had headed to his home in Philadelphia.
Gregor’s thoughts returned to the present, he had experienced some setbacks because of his adversary, but he knew Manning now, and wouldn’t underestimate him again. He took a sip of his sienna-colored cognac and raised his glass. “Round one to you, Manning.”

Todd was taking steps rather gingerly trying to avoid his giggling granddaughter and Sam. They were trying to help but were laughing so hard at his awkward steps. Their laughter was infectious and he couldn’t help making his steps even sillier just so he could listen to them. He had spent the better part of the last two days getting his legs to cooperate and hold him up. The doctor had agreed to let him go home but only if he could walk the whole hallway. He had just finished that in front of the doctor when Starr had shown up with Hope and Sam. When they had insisted on helping, it had turned into a circus act. Hope had grabbed one hand and Sam the other but since he was still a little unsteady, the balance was all wrong and his steps had wandered all over the hallway. Hope wanted to go one way and Sam the other until suddenly, they crossed in front of him. That was when Todd had had to do some real fancy footwork to keep from falling over. It was those steps that had set the kids to laughing. The actions of the three of them and the laughter had drawn the attention of the nurses and soon even they were laughing. Somehow they made it back to his room without any spills and Todd collapsed into his chair pulling Hope up onto his lap. Sam sat down on the chair arm and reached over and gave Todd a quick hug. Todd looked at Sam. “Thanks, Sam, what was that for?”
Sam shrugged. “I miss my dad. You’re going to stay now, right?”
Todd recalled his own mother’s death and hugged Sam to reassure him. “You bet.”
“Yes!” Sam gave Todd another squeeze.
Todd looked up as Starr entered with his discharge papers.
“You’re all set Dad, let’s get you home. The nurse will be in to bring you down to the car. Come on kids.”
Todd watched them leave and got up to gather his belongings, as much as he hated the idea he knew he’d have to wait for the nurse. He was close to the bed when the phone rang. “Hello?” A pause at the end of the other line brought his attention closer to the anticipation of the sound he awaited.
“I hear you’re going home today. Congratulations.”
Gregor.
Todd”s hand tightened around the phone. “Thanks, you really need to upgrade your help, Daimler. They’re sloppy.”
“You know, you’re right. Money doesn’t buy what it used to. We didn’t get a chance to finish our talk, you left so abruptly.”
“I figured I said all I needed to. Seems I didn’t get my point across quite the way I had intended.” There was no quick retort. Todd smiled.
“Enough with the niceties. The game’s on.”
“You should leave well enough alone, Gregor. I hate to lose.” Todd hung up abruptly on Gregor. He squared his shoulders. Here we go again, guys.
…..
Gregor slammed the phone down. He reached for his shoulder, the wound refused to heal properly. His doctors told him it was fine, but Gregor was sure something was still wrong with it. At that moment, he would have liked to have had Manning’s neck between his hands.
…..
When Todd heard Daimler’s voice, something in him shifted. He grabbed a pillow and sent it flying across the room. Adrenaline began pumping through his body as the anticipation of a fight with Gregor resurfaced. Todd had to move and began pacing, his fingers moving rapidly by his side and he mentally counted down what he would like to do to Gregor. Ripping him from limb to limb would be a good start. Maybe just cutting off his pecker would work. He certainly wouldn’t be able to harm any more young girls. “Easy Todd, let’s not go overboard. He’s a scumbag, but you don’t want to go to jail, think creative.” Todd felt alive again in every sense of the word. He loved scheming and had missed the action of getting under someone’s skin. He chuckled knowing he had done just that for a brief moment on the phone. Daimler had called hoping to get a rise out of him and he had managed to turn the tables. Daimler made the first move, now it was his turn. It was a dog eat dog world and to remain a top dog sometimes you had to do ugly things. A cold laughter burst from Todd’s lips and he caught himself. “Quit fighting me, you need me for this fight.” “No, you’re nothing but trouble..” “Oh please, give it up. I am you. You can feel it. You said it yourself, you’d like to take the man apart piece by piece. Let’s do it, it’ll be fun.” Todd stared hard at his reflection. “Forget it, I’m doing this my way.” He looked away from the mirror and ran a hand shakily through his hair. He took a deep breath grateful for the silence. Daimler was a hound that needed to be put down and Todd was going to make it happen. “I’m coming to get you, Old Man.”
The nurse arrived with his wheelchair and Todd took his seat, looking forward to getting home. He had plans to make. He wasn’t sure why but he felt Daimler was still in the States. “First order of business, find out where you called from, Gregor.”
“What was that Mr. Lord?”
Todd looked up at the nurse. “Sorry just thinking out loud.”
She stopped the wheelchair and they waited as Starr pulled up. Within minutes, Todd was headed back to his family, “Okay Gregor, now the game begins.”
He relaxed back into his chair and reached for his aged cognac. He couldn’t stop the twinge of pain coming from his left shoulder, having underestimated Todd Manning again. His thoughts went back to that last moment on the ship.

Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 14
Chapter 14
She listened to his breathing and knew he had fallen asleep. The door to the room opened and seeing the doctor, Blair stood back up beside Todd. He looked so peaceful at that moment. She looked at the doctor. “He just fell asleep, that’s all it is, isn’t it?” The doctor did a quick check and nodded. Blair had been holding her breath and released it. “Thank God. Do you think he’s back to stay?”
The doctor didn’t want to give her any false hopes, but the stats looked good. “I‘m pretty sure Mr. Lord is back with us. I’m amazed he stayed awake as long as he did. The attack was a strong one and we both know his heart needs the time to recover. You should take some time to rest too. He’ll be in and out for the next few hours.”
Blair shook her head. “He needs to see me when he wakes, and I need to be here when he does. He said something to me earlier and I promised him I wasn’t going anywhere. Do you understand?” Without even realizing she was doing it, she moved his hair off his face.
The doctor saw her expression and knew she wouldn’t leave. He had seen that kind of devotion a few other times during his career. Thomas Lord was a lucky man. “Alright, but think about getting some rest. You’re no good to him if you collapse,” he left to check on some of his other patients.
Blair couldn’t tear her eyes away from his face. A part of her wanted him to reawaken, but she knew he needed this sleep. It suddenly occurred to her that Vicki needed to be called. She and Tea both had been keeping contact. The calls had been short since Hesser’s assassins were still in the picture. Things had died down after the verdict had been announced. Hesser and Kipling both had been given life sentences. Somehow, Hesser’s new attorney had managed to keep Carlo off of death row for the murder of his first attorney. They had pleaded diminished capacity due to a drug interaction and the jury had recommended leniency.
John had insisted they continue to keep Samuel’s whereabouts off the radar, so they were communicating with throwaway phones that couldn’t be traced. Blair wondered if it was even necessary anymore. It had all been quiet since Todd was shot.
Blair pulled a chair close and sat down next to Todd. Then she pulled out her phone to call Vicki. She waited for someone to pick up. “Hello... Yes, Nigel, is Vicki home?...I’ll wait...Vicki, Todd’s out of the coma...Yes, just this afternoon...Things were scary at first. He went into cardiac arrest. After they got him stabilized, he just woke up...No, the doctors can’t explain the heart attack or the sudden awakening. He appears to be fine, no effects from the coma. Vicki, there’s another miracle, he can see. Oh, Vicki, I thought my heart would burst when he opened his eyes... I’ll give him your love. Take care Vicki.” she closed the phone and looked at him. He was getting a little agitated and she leaned in. “Shh, it‘s alright. I’m here and I’m not going anywhere.” He quieted at her words and she gently took his hand back into hers and laid her head down on the bed to rest.
Todd awoke to a lot of hustle and bustle in the room and his hand still entangled with Blair’s. In the light, he could see the signs of exhaustion on her face and wondered how many sleepless nights she had sat at his bedside. He began to play with the strands of her hair close to his hand. He was entranced with the way they clung and wrapped around his fingers. It was like finely spun silk slipping through them. His fingers moved to slide the hair off her face and wandered down feeling her soft breath blow across them as they made their way to her lips. He was tracing them when he felt her response. It was the lightest kiss, on his fingers. Her eyes met his and she raised her head, moving upward to kiss him properly. This time slowly and sensually she captured his lip with a small nip and followed it with the tip of her tongue seeking entrance. He granted her request deepening the kiss and responding back in kind. He finally had to call a halt, when he realized he was having a little trouble breathing.
She raised her head puzzled at his withdrawal, then noticed his discomfort. “Oh God Todd, I’m sorry. It’s been so long.” She stopped talking as his hand went to her lips.
“Shh, just need ...to ..catch ..my breath.” Todd laid there and realized just how weak he was. “Never ...knew...sleeping …” he paused again. Trying to draw in more air but finding deep breaths were out of the question. “could ...drain you.” The nurse chose that moment to come in and take some vitals and saw that his oxygen reading was down. She hooked him up to the oxygen and Todd began to feel stronger. Looking over at Blair, he saw her fretting. “Relax, I guess I’m not going to be doing any marathon running just yet.” He peered mischievously at her. “We’ll just have to keep them shorter and more frequent.”
Blair met his eyes, puzzled for a moment by his comment then she laughed as it hit her. “I think that can be arranged.” She immediately made good on her statement. She giggled as they finished and he grinned back. Blair reached for his face unable to keep her hands off him. She was so happy to be talking and joking with him. She had news from home but wasn’t sure if Todd was ready to hear it.
Todd saw Blair get pensive. “Hey, where did you go just now?” his hand caught hers as she started to take it away. “What’s bothering you?”
“I don’t know if I should even bring this up. You shouldn’t be worrying about anything but getting better right now.”
“Blair, tell me. What’s going on?”
“John called yesterday and told me that Hesser is finally being shipped to Statesville today.”
“You told me I was in a coma for a month. I thought Hesser would have been transported to Statesville before now.”
“There were complications from his injuries, his doctors have only now released him.” Blair watched as Todd got very still.
Todd remembered how close he had come to killing Hesser. He could still feel the give of Carlo’s windpipe beneath his fingers. “You almost did it, but you lost again. She’ll help me keep you at bay.”
“Are you so sure of that, remember just because you have control now doesn’t mean I can’t take it back.”Todd gasped he hadn’t expected an answer. It was strange, like a disembodied voice in his head. He felt cold. The monster still lived. He shuddered knowing it was right. There had to be a way to free himself of it once and for all.
“Are you alright Todd?"
“I’m just cold. Guess I’m overdoing it.” He needed to shake off the dread he was feeling. Blair covered him with a blanket and felt his forehead, the last thing he needed was an infection. Todd took her hand away. “Thank you, I’m okay really.” His stomach growled and it suddenly occurred to him, he was hungry. “Any chance of getting some food around here?”
Blair laughed. “I think we can find you something, but it will be light. “
“Okay. How about Chinese?” he replied with a straight face.
“Toddddd. I just told you...” She saw the twinkle in his eyes and knew then he was teasing her. “OOOOh, You stop that.”
“Seriously. This liquid diet thing just isn’t hacking it,” he rolled his eyes at his IV. He was having fun getting a rise out of her. She was always so cute when she got flustered. “Come on Blair, look at me. I’m wasting away here. I need some real food.” At that moment, he realized he spoke the truth. The IV might be providing him with nourishment, but he felt as weak as a kitten.
“Okay, take it easy, will you let me slip out and see what I can do for you?”
His heart skipped a beat when he realized she would have to leave the room. He was afraid to lose sight of her. It was irrational, but he couldn’t shake the fear this was all just a dream.
Blair watched the color drain from his face as she made the suggestion and knew he wasn’t ready to be separated yet. She couldn’t blame him. In her own way, her fear, that he would drift away again, was just as palpable. “Never mind, I’ll call Starr. She’ll bring us both something, will that work?” He visibly relaxed. Before calling Starr, she rang the nurses' station. A nurse came to see what they needed and left to get the doctor’s approval for some solid food. She returned with a list of items Todd could begin with and Blair made her call. As she read the list, Blair smiled. “You’re in luck, how does Egg Drop Soup sound.”
Todd leaned back against his pillows chuckling. “Bring it on.”
After Blair got off the phone with Starr, she turned her attention back to Todd. “How are you doing?”
“I’m sorry Blair, I should have listened to John from the get-go. I really thought I had enough on Gregor to just make him leave town.”
She was surprised he had brought up Daimler and then she realized it had been the last thing he remembered. Of course, it was still on his mind. “Hey, you had no way of knowing he would come after us. I told you he disappeared. They found blood in his office, but there was no sign of him.”
“I don’t like it, Blair, I’m afraid he’s going to want to get Kym back. She was under his thumb for so long. She might not be able to resist if he makes a play.”
“That won’t happen, Todd. C.J. and Joshua are keeping a close eye on her. They’ve also hired some professionals to maintain security around the orchard. There’s no way he can get close to her right now.”
“But he disappeared off that damn ship again. Hurt or not he’s dangerous.”
“Todd, there’s nothing you can do. You just woke up. Your wounds might be healed, but you’re a long way from recovered. You’re also still a target, at least for now.”
“Damn, didn’t John tell Bo I was shot. They could have spread the news, that Samuel was seriously wounded. It might have taken that monkey off my back.”
“As a matter of fact, the Banner broke the story two days after you were shot. Your condition was stated as critical, but your whereabouts were kept secret. It’s still unknown if the news made a difference to the ones who took out the contract.”
“Yeah, but I was out for a month. No one’s made any attempt on me right?”
“Right, John said there’s a possibility the contract on Samuel has been canceled. He’s just waiting for some confirmation.”
“Great, if we get that, then we can go home. With Gregor gone, I can’t do much more here. I want my life back, it’s been long enough.” he was frustrated. He had lost another month with Blair and his kids. From Jack’s reaction, he was almost back to square one with Jack. He needed to change that. “Blair, what’s going on with Jack?”
“Jack’s been pretty withdrawn since you were shot. That, coming so close on top of Jake’s death, was hard for him. He’s been acting out at the school here, getting into fights. He needs his father now more than ever.
“I’ve got to get out of here. The sooner the better.”
“Um, I think you’re going to need to gain some strength back before you can come home, Todd. You haven’t moved since the surgery. I don’t think you’ll even be able to stand right now.”
“Well there’s only one way to find out,” he pulled the covers aside, his legs felt like lead weights but he was determined to move them. He sat up struggling to slip his legs off the bed.
“Hey Todd, stop that.” Blair pushed him back down. “Now isn’t the time. I want you home as much as anybody.” He started to protest and she covered his mouth. “Hush. Forget it, mister. When the doctor tells you it’s alright, then you can try and leave that bed.”
Todd glared at her over her hand but stopped trying to say anything. He knew she was right, just trying to move that little bit had taken it out of him. Of course, he would never admit it to Blair.
The door opened and Starr entered with some food. From the look on her dad’s face, she figured he was upset about something. “Looks like I got here just in time. What’s got you all riled up?”
He managed to look a little abashed. “Nothing some food wouldn’t cure. Please tell me I can eat now.”
Starr laughed and soon they were eating. About halfway through his soup, Todd realized he couldn’t eat anymore, even though he wanted to and he was finding it hard to keep awake to talk to Starr. He laid the spoon down and leaned back against his pillow looking at his daughter chatting with Blair. They were beautiful together. Starr had grown up into a lovely young woman. Try as he might he couldn’t keep his eyes opened and sleep took him again.
She listened to his breathing and knew he had fallen asleep. The door to the room opened and seeing the doctor, Blair stood back up beside Todd. He looked so peaceful at that moment. Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 13
Chapter 13
He was walking in the park. It was muggy out. It was over and he felt so alone. He had been searching for quite a while and had given up hope Then he came upon her and it looked like she had been crying. He couldn’t believe his eyes. She was really quite beautiful all in white. “My God, You’re okay!”
She looked up. There were tears in her eyes. “Oh, I hoped you would come. No, I’m not okay. How could you do this to me?” She swiveled on the park bench turning away from him.
“Whoa, what did I do?” He hated when she was upset with him. He wanted to go to her. He needed to feel her close to him, but something was stopping him.
“You went off and left me again. I don’t understand why you do that? I thought you loved me?”
“But I do. Don’t you see, I’m not good for you. You got hurt because of me. I never wanted you to get hurt.” Why was she doing this to him? She had ended up in the line of fire because of him. Couldn’t she see that?
He was being deliberately obtuse. She turned back to him, “Do you even hear yourself? You don’t want me to get hurt, so you leave, but that is what hurts me the most. I fell in love with you, all of you, the good and the bad. I knew what I was getting into. When are you going to realize I need you desperately? You complete me.”
Unable to stop himself, he sat down next to her on the bench. The park was immaculate. He had never seen it so clean. It was strange and peaceful. There was something about her that always made him feel calm. He had been in such turmoil when he thought she was lost to him and now sitting next to her suddenly filled him with such joy. He looked into her eyes still sparkling with tears. “I’m not worth it, you know. I destroy everyone I love. Without me, you can be happy and find someone who’ll take care of you instead of hurt you.”
She reached and touched his face, “It doesn’t work that way for me. I can’t love them the way I love you and it always ends. You’re the only man I want. If I can’t have you, I might as well die.”
The alarms were going off. “We’re losing him! Raise it to 200. Clear...” the monitor showed a flat line. “Again!”
He gripped her arms. “Don’t you ever say that. You have to keep living. If you were to die it would be all over for me. I can live with this emptiness as long as I know you’re around.” He hugged her to him, afraid she would get up and leave before he could make her understand.
She had gotten the response she wanted and she nestled deeper into his arms. “Your life doesn’t need to be empty. Just stay with me and we’ll both be complete. I love you, Todd, totally and always. Don’t leave me. I’m here, you just need to come to take me.” She put her hand over his heart and he felt a warmth spread through him. She stood up to leave but held out her hand. “Come on, it’s time to go.”
“Put it at 250... Clear!...” Still no response.
“I don’t understand. Go where?”
“Don’t worry. It’s where you want to go, I promise you. You said you wanted what was best for me. Come with me.”
He wanted that warmth, he needed it to exist. He reached for her hand and the warmth surged through him, enveloping him in her love.
They were standing in a clearing. Their home stood beautifully bathed in a golden sunrise. “You built that for me. Can you feel the love that radiates from it? You poured your love for me into it. I felt it the first moment I saw it. It’s a strong place built by a strong man. You always underestimate your worth. You’re a survivor and I know the real man you hide from the world. You don’t have to hide from me. Love is waiting for us through those doors. Will you come home and let me prove it to you “ She smiled at him pulling him toward their home.
He took steps to follow her, it was all he ever really wanted, her and a home.“Raise it to 300. Clear!....” suddenly they heard a beat. “Okay, we got him back.” The doctor checked the stats. The heartbeat was getting stronger, but they knew it was touch and go with him. “Stay with him, I’ll talk to his family.” The doctor looked at his patient. The man was a bloody miracle. By rights, he should have been dead several times over but for some reason, he refused to give up. The doctor had been sure he was going to have to finally give his family some bad news, but the man had surprised them all again.
They were waiting anxiously as he came out the door. “We got him back. I know all of you want to go into him, but I’m going to keep it to only two at a time. His condition is still critical and we aren’t sure what brought on this latest episode.”
The nurse was trying to make her patient more comfortable when she noticed the tears. “Mr. Lord, can you hear me?”
Everything was so foggy. He had taken Blair’s hand and then she had disappeared. Try as he might, he couldn’t find her. Heartbroken, the tears began to fall. In the distance, he heard a voice. They seemed to be trying to reach someone. He didn’t think anyone else was around. Maybe if he could find that voice, they would help him find Blair. He headed in the direction of the voice. The monitors showed a very steady heartbeat, but his pulse was increasing, “Mr. Lord?”
He moved his head. The nurse went to the door. “Doctor, I think he might be coming around.”
The doctor looked over at the group. He met her eyes and said. “Come with me.” His eyes swept the rest of the group, “All of you. If he is coming around, seeing all of you might be just what he needs.”
They followed him into the room and the Doctor went up to his patient. There were definite signs he was waking up. “Mr. Lord, can you hear me? Open your eyes,” his head again moved and the doctor looked at the woman standing beside him. “Talk to him. He might respond to your voice.”
“Hey, it’s time you woke up. I think you’ve had a long enough nap. Don’t leave me hanging here. Open your beautiful eyes.”
The fog was lifting. Suddenly he heard it all play out in front of him. Daimler’s voice mocking him, and Blair’s declaration of love as she was taken away. He recalled getting away from Daimler and struggling to reach the gangplank knowing that John could help him rescue Blair and the rest of her family. The last thing he remembered, as the bullets ripped through him, was that Blair was gone. How could he be hearing her voice? It sounded heavenly. That had to be it. Had God actually let him into heaven? “Who are you kidding Manning? The devil is playing tricks on you. You’re dead and the devil is tormenting you.”
“You idiot. You’re not dead.”
“Pete?”
“Damn straight! Do you know how long we’ve been trying to reach you? Never mind. Open your eyes, stupid. You’re keeping her waiting.”
“Who?"
“Who do you think? Come on, if you don’t have the nerve, let me out.”
"Shut up, Pete” Todd struggled to open his eyes. God, they felt so heavy. Slowly the light filtered in, he marveled at how bright it was. Then his eyes began making out some shapes but only one stood out. As he looked, the image became sharper and he saw her standing above him. Her emerald eyes were shining with tears. He reached up to make sure she was real.
Blair’s heart soared as his eyes opened. She grabbed his hand and began kissing it and sobbing for joy at the same time.
“Blair?” it only came out a whisper but he couldn’t take his eyes off her. He was afraid if he looked away she would disappear again.
“It’s alright, don’t talk, save your strength. It’s me, I’m fine, we’re all fine.” She knew what was running through his mind and she wanted to put it at ease. “You’ve been gone so long. I was beginning to think you didn’t want me anymore.”
Todd gripped her hand at those words, his eyes filling with tears again. “Never. Need you always.” He could barely get the words out. He didn’t know how she had gotten free from Daimler’s men, and it didn’t really matter. He hadn’t lost her, that was the most important thing. Holding tight to her hand, he took the chance to look away. He could see, he couldn’t believe it. There were actual colors and shapes and faces. Starr and Jack, Addie and Kym, C.J. and the kids; it was unbelievable. They were there for him.
Vicki had tried so many times to make him feel like part of the family, but he had never been comfortable except with her and Jess. To the rest of her family, he was the black sheep they didn’t really want to acknowledge. He had been okay with that. but he had admitted to himself the envy he felt for those who were welcomed. None of that mattered anymore.
His eyes came back to Blair. “God, I love you.” His breath caught as she leaned and kissed him. He closed his eyes feeling the softness of her lips on his, his tongue escaped to part them, eagerly seeking to take all she was offering.
“Mrs. Lord, I need to check him out.”
His eyes flew open in a panic. “No! Don’t go!” he was almost crushing Blair’s hand.
“Mr. Lord, you need to calm down. I won’t make her leave. I just need her to give me some room.” The doctor watched as Blair maneuvered around the head of the bed carefully, not letting go of her husband’s hand. Then he began his examination. After a few minutes, he smiled and said, “Everything is looking good. Just keep him quiet. I really would like him to have as little excitement as possible. I urge you all to keep your visit short.” The doctor and the nurse took their leave and the family moved to gather around Todd’s bed.
They all started talking at once, and Todd just stared. He didn’t know who to answer first or even what to answer. His gaze fell on Addie and Kym. “How?”
Blair saw who he was looking at and answered. “John, that’s how. He called for backup when you boarded the ship and then he saw Sid and his cohorts take us aboard. John and his men were ready for them when they brought us out and quickly turned the tables on them. We were watching from the dock when John yelled at you. Sid is the one who shot you. He’s dead.”
“Gregor?” Todd looked at her, he needed to know if they caught him.
She shook her head. “He disappeared.”
Todd could feel a weight pressing down on him, his whole body ached. His chest felt like it had when Sid and company had gotten through with him. He couldn’t stop the wince as he moved to get a better view of everyone. Gregor was still out there somewhere and there was no telling when he might enter their lives again. But he wouldn’t worry about the man now. Starr had moved up close to the other side of him after the Doctor had left. “Hi Shorty, how’s Hope?”
Starr smiled tremulously and touched her dad’s face. “She’s fine and misses her dragon. I’m so glad you’re finally awake. Do you think you can stay out of trouble for the rest of the year? You’re giving me gray hairs.”
He smiled, she had always been able to wrap him around her finger. He certainly couldn’t have her turning gray before her time. “Hey, I’ll try but I’m not making promises.” He looked over at Jack who was watching him rather seriously. “Jack, are you okay?”
Jack gulped and nodded hastily, then ran out of the room. Todd frowned but didn’t say anything.
“I’ll go get him, Dad,” said Starr.
“No, let him go. I understand." he paused, catching his breath "So dry." Starr quickly got some water and held the straw as her father drank. "Thank you. You should go, too. You’ve got Hope, she needs you." he rested a moment "I’m going to be fine. Not going anywhere.”
Starr frowned but gave him a quick kiss and promised to return with Hope.
Todd watched her leave then looked back over at Addie and Kym. “I’m sorry, I bungled... You both got caught. I hope you’ll forgive me." he had to stop again, it was so tiring just talking. "I thought I could handle Gregor. I was wrong. I won’t underestimate him again.”
Addie moved closer and gave him a kiss. “You did nothing wrong. Just get better, Blair needs you.” Then she walked to Blair, gave her a hug, and exited the room.
Kym moved closer and looked at her brother-in-law. “She’s right, you know. All you’ve done since I met you, is trying to help me. I was a stranger and you still came to my aid. Because of you, I’m free from Father, and I’ve met my half-sister. I’ve got a family and it’s all your doing. You take it easy and get better, I’m glad you’re back in the land of the living.”
As Kym left, Todd wondered what was in store for all of them now. Suddenly he found himself being hugged senseless by Lily. “Oh gosh, I’m so glad you’re awake. It‘s been so long. Daddy kept telling me you would wake up but you sure took your time. We came to see you and took turns with everyone. I got a chance to have a long talk with Kym and we’re working on our issues together. Kym’s been staying at the orchard with us. It’s great. She’s discovering life on a farm is different, but she tells us she’s enjoying the adventure.” She paused to catch her breath.
Todd smiled and said before she could start up again. “Thank you for coming and keeping watch. Thank you, too, for my kiss.”
Lily’s eyes widened in surprise. “You felt that!’
“I did. I’m sorry, I couldn't tell you at the time.” Lily responded to his words by giving him another quick kiss. Todd met his nephew’s eyes. “C.J. it means a lot... that you’ve been here.”
“Best buds forever remember?” C.J. smiled at his uncle, his thoughts went to another time. “Ali, Ali out. You saved me, and you’re a hero. Best friends forever, you’ll never forget....”
“I’ll never forget. C.J.” Todd found himself back in that room watching his little buddy leave and holding superhero. C.J. and Sarah had given him his life back, he would always owe them.
Chase tugged at Todd’s hospital gown. “Hey, don’t forget me. I’ve been here too. I’m happy you’re back, Ali. Everyone has been pretty down because you slept so long. How did you do that? I hate staying in bed all day. You can’t have any fun if you’re asleep.”
Todd laughed and even though it hurt he felt better. “You know what, Chase, you’re right. It’s so much easier. I think I’ll try and stay awake more....I’ve had plenty of sleep, don’t you agree?”
“You sure have, you been asleep for over a month.”
Todd looked in shock at Blair. “I’ve been out for a month?”
Blair nodded.
“Was Samuel in charge?”
“No Todd, all of you were out. You’ve been in a coma since they brought you out of surgery. Do you remember anything about that time?”
Todd wracked his brain. He felt a certain uneasiness because he sensed something had occurred while he was out, but whatever happened remained elusive. He wasn’t sure he wanted to search for it either. “There’s nothing I can remember, just a strange feeling." he met her eyes. God, no wonder I'm so weak. "I don’t want to go there, I awake now and I’m determined to stay awake." Todd looked back at Chase. "Chase, thank you for coming with your sister and father... hopefully I'll be up for a visit to the farm soon.”
“You bet Ali. See you.” The boy gave Todd a thumbs up and grabbed his sister. “Come on Lily. Dad, hurry up.”
“I’ll be right there Chase.” C.J. turned back to Todd and Blair. “You do what the doctors tell you and we’ll be back here to see you later. It’s great to see you awake. Take care of him, Blair,” and with that, he left to go after his children.
Blair looked at Todd, he was pale from earlier but his eyes were clear and she wanted to drown in them. She sat down next to him on the bed. ”It was a shock wasn’t it, finding out how long you were gone from us. Don’t let it bother you. The doctor said you were looking good. It’s hard to imagine but just a short while ago, they were trying to restart your heart.” She put her hand on his heart, feeling it beating underneath.
Todd covered her hand with his. Feeling her warmth radiating from her, an image of another moment flashed through his mind. She had been crying on the park bench and told him she wanted to die if he wouldn’t stay. She had touched him and he had felt such warmth, but then lost her. No! His heart lurched no more losses. “Don’t ever leave me, Blair, I can’t . . .” his voice cracked.
She frowned at his choice of words. “I promise to be here always. I’m through running away.” Blair stayed close and they quietly talked. She told him more about John’s rescue of her and the others.
Her voice trailed off mid-story and Todd looked at Blair. She was staring into space. “Blair, what is it”
She refocused on him and gave him a hug suddenly.
"Hey what’s the matter?”
She was laying against him clutching him tightly. “Todd, when I heard John yell, I looked up and watched those bullets hit you. Everything slowed down, it was like, a movie or something. You tumbled down the gangplank and laid there broken and bleeding. I couldn’t stop the blood. You were so pale and quiet. John kept telling me you were alive, and I could only hold you. Things became a blur of sirens and feeling you turning cold in my arms” Todd wrapped his arms around her shivering body as she recalled the night. “The doctors say you’re a miracle once again. I thank God every night because I swear you really have nine lives. You must have been a cat in your other existence. Or somebody upstairs likes you more than you realize.” she relaxed in his embrace, listening to his heartbeat.
He hugged her in response, knowing how close he had once again come to losing it all. Maybe she was right. Someone upstairs kept giving him these second chances. How many more were they going to give him? He sure as hell wasn’t going to try to find that out anytime soon. Todd felt sleep overtaking him and although he tried to fight it, he lost and drifted off with Blair lying in his arms.
Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 12
Chapter 12
A gasp went through the whole room, as all looked to see who would walk through the door. Manning had been shot down and killed only a few days earlier. Hesser wondered if Samuel was going to walk in and claim his identity. Kipling, too, was curious if their visitor from the day before would enter. A hush fell over the room when the newly dead Todd Manning walked into the courtroom surrounded by guards. Pandemonium reigned for several minutes as the defense lawyers had to regroup under this new threat. The crowd watching had started to talk and the judge quickly called the room to order.
Jake looked around the room and spotted Tea and smiled reassuringly. He then went up to the witness box.
“Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”
“I do”
“State your name.”
Jake hesitated. He looked over at Nora and she nodded. “Jacques Boudreau.”
The courtroom erupted again.
After a few minutes with everyone talking at once, the judge brought the room under control again and turned to his prosecutor. “Counselor, would you like to explain?”
“Yes, Your Honor. Mr. Manning was in protective custody following the attempt on his life. I was unaware he had petitioned the court for a legal name change. This document just arrived Your Honor stating that Todd Manning is now legally Jacques Boudreau, but he was already on the docket to appear as Todd Manning. With the courts’ permission, I request a change of name for my witness from Todd Manning to Jacques Boudreau.”
“Let the document showing the official name change be entered and you may proceed with your questioning of Todd Manning now Jacques Boudreau.” The judge held up his hand silencing the defense who would have protested. “The witness stays gentlemen, only his name changed.”
“Mr. Boudreau, for the sake of those present here, why did you petition for a name change?”
“Because it was my real name up until 2003. I wanted it back.”
“Please explain.”
“I was grabbed off the street in Philadelphia while I was there on business. I was beaten to a pulp and found myself in a clinic when I awoke. That was when my treatments started.”
“I see, so you couldn’t remember your name at the time you awoke?”
“That’s just it, I told them I was Jake Boudreau, but they told me I was delusional and said the treatments would help me see the truth. They kept calling me Todd Manning and said I needed the treatments to help me regain my memories. Through a series of excruciating treatments, I began to accept that I was Todd Manning and that I had a wife and children waiting here for me to come home. I was told as long as I kept up my prescriptions and took them faithfully, I could live a relatively normal life and have no worries of a relapse.”
“So you’re telling us, they told you, you were Todd Manning and all about his life, is that correct? You believed you were this Manning and came here when?”
“I arrived in town in 2003 and came into town as a man known as Walker Lawrence. I was told that would help me reestablish myself slowly back into Llanview until my wife Blair and my daughter Starr could adjust to my being alive. I then took over my life as Todd Manning.”
“Why have you decided to change your name at this time?”
“Because for the last eight years I’ve been living a lie. I’m not Todd Manning and never have been. I was brainwashed because of someone’s sick idea to further the cause of science and make big bucks doing it. I was a guinea pig, for lack of a better word.”
“Do you know the man who brainwashed you?”
“Yes.”
“Is he here in the courtroom?”
“That’s him sitting next to Carlo Hesser. My doctor and handler Ivan Kipling.” Jake pointed to Ivan. He got only a mild reaction from Kipling, but he hadn’t really expected any. Ivan was a cold fish and Jake could feel his anger rising. He forced himself to keep it in check.
“Mr. Boudreau, how did you find out you had been brainwashed?”
“The day I awoke from my coma after being shot, I met the man I had replaced. Headaches, that had been occurring for over a year, began to get severe and I started remembering bits and pieces of my real past. The doctors discovered that I had two implants in my brain that were deteriorating. After their removal, my real memories came flooding back including the atrocities done to me during my stay at the clinic. The first attempt on my life was their way of silencing me before I remembered. Unfortunately for the ones in charge, it, plus the most recent attempt, failed. I owe my life to the real Todd Manning.”
“For clarity’s sake, you know that Dr. Ivan Kipling is the doctor who implanted the microchips into your brain and gave you the treatments that made you believe you were Todd Manning. Is this true?”
“Yes, he has been my doctor for the last eight years. I went to him a little over a year ago complaining of blinding headaches and he gave me some medicine he said would take care of the pain. My wife and a doctor at the hospital discovered that what I had been taking wasn’t pain pills, but some type of hallucinogenic. Those same pills put me into a coma for several months after I was shot. The memories have been returning swiftly and I remember clearly Dr. Kipling telling me the treatments were necessary for my sanity. I was told they hurt because I was trying to fight my treatments. In order to avoid the pain, I gave in to the images and let them take me over. Now as memories of my real-life return, I realize the damage done to so many people by the man sitting in that chair.”
“Thank you, Mr. Boudreau, I have no further questions.”
The defense attorney for Dr. Kilpling rose. “Mr. Boudreau, you say you recall Dr. Kipling giving you those treatments at his clinic, but then you tell us you were on mind-altering drugs recently. Are you asking us to believe you have an accurate memory after your mind was tampered with? Isn’t it a fact, that your doctor’s prescription said you were taking pain pills? What makes you believe you were being given drugs instead?”
“I believe it because I went through the withdrawal when they had to clear the drug out of my system. My pills were tested and found to be laced with a concentrated drug designed to keep one’s psyche compliant and under control but too much of it causes severe side effects. The same side effects I had begun experiencing right before I was shot. As to my mental state, I’ve been examined by several renowned psychiatrists and all will attest to my sanity. There is nothing wrong with my memory about my life before I became Todd Manning. I have very clear memories of my life before, during, and after the clinic. In other words sir, I’m fine and I know who took me, who programmed me, and what I’ve done these last eight years.” Jake looked directly into the eyes of the attorney and stared him down.
The attorney knew he had made a mistake. He had tried to make Boudreau look unstable in the eyes of the jury and had only succeeded in making him look stronger. “Thank you, Mr. Boudreau. I have no more questions, Your Honor”
“You may step down Mr. Boudreau.”
Jake got up and walked slowly back to sit down with Tea and Blair. The marshals remained standing at the back of the courtroom keeping an eye out for anyone acting suspiciously.
Nora gathered herself. It was time for Samuel and she prayed he would hold up under cross-examination. “The prosecution calls Samuel Toddman to the stand.”
Samuel took John’s elbow and allowed him to lead the way. He took his seat after being sworn in.
“Mr. Toddman, what is your reason for coming here today?’
“Carlo Hesser and Ivan Kipling experimented on a number of people to satisfy government contracts for clandestine projects. As one of their victims, I wanted to tell my story.”
“Before we hear your story, could you tell us how you lost your sight?”
“I was on my honeymoon when the implants in my brain flared and caused me to take a tumble while riding a horse. My doctor found the implants and removed them, but their placement resulted in my blindness. It was like adding insult to injury because I had already lost eight years of my life and my memory because of the implants. “
“You have my sympathy. Could you tell us what you now remember? Take your time.”
"Eight years ago I became aware, it was when Mitch Lawrence gave me this scar, after having his goons beat me near to death. My next memory was waking in extreme pain and being wheeled down a hallway. I was taken into a room and he introduced himself as my doctor and said I was to begin treatments. What ensued was horrific.” Samuel felt his pulse begin to speed up as the dull pain began to build in his head. “Todd, I’m not sure we’re going to be able to do this.”
“Hang in there Samuel, if the pain gets too intense, we stop. Try telling only the bare minimum, maybe the implant will settle back down.”
“Mr. Toddman, are you okay?”
Samuel realized Nora was trying to get his attention. He took a deep breath, “I’m sorry, did you ask a question?”
“Mr. Toddman, you stopped talking is something wrong?”
“My apologies, I’m developing a bit of a headache. Where was I? Oh yes, the doctor. He was a cold man with silver hair and mustache, cold eyes, and his most distinguishing feature was his damn black hand. I remember feeling anxious, as well as in pain when I met him. Rather than trust him, he brought out this feeling of fear. Something I quickly learned had been spot on.” Samuel gritted his teeth as the pain once again began, he controlled his breathing trying desperately to get out the tale. “The doctor hooked me up to this machine and as I watched he pushed the lever. From that moment on the torment began.” Samuel reached for his head, no longer able to fight the pain.
“Mr. Toddman, you are obviously in distress, can you continue?” Nora looked at Samuel worried he was going to bring on another heart attack.
“I just need a moment,” he had broken into a sweat trying to fight the pain. "I need to get this out. The machine I was hooked up to was designed to interact with the implants they had inserted into my brain and one by one...” he gulped and again pressed his hand to this head. “It stripped me of my memories. Envision someone taking small slices of your skin and peeling it off piece by piece. That was what was going on with each treat...ahhh...” Samuel stopped once again as he dropped to his knees, the pain in his head overwhelming him.
“Mr. Toddman!” Nora turned to the courtroom and signaled Larry to come forward. “Doctor please.”
Larry and Michael had already gotten up and were making their way to Samuel’s side. Blair was on her feet, but Tea and Jake were keeping her back.
Everyone in the courtroom was watching the drama unfold. Hesser and Kipling looking at each other as they realized the damage Samuel had just done to the case. Sympathy had already been given to him by half the jury members when he had taken the stand in his blind condition, this added distress was working on them even more.
“Your honor could we have a moment while the doctors evaluate my witness.”
“Granted counselor, but I can only allow a few minutes, if your witness is unable to continue, we will proceed without him.”
Samuel was struggling to think, he knew there was something that would make some of the pain go away, but he couldn’t clear his thoughts. The pain was beating down on him.
Larry quickly began checking to make sure Todd’s heart was holding up. He and Michael got Samuel back into the chair. Michael began talking quietly to Samuel who seemed oblivious to them. Michael decided to try and reach Todd. “Todd, if you can hear me, I need you to come forth. We need to know exactly what is going on. Todd!”
Todd was as muddled as Samuel, but he heard Michael and forced his way to the surface. “Michael” he whispered. "Michael find the ring.” Todd could feel himself slipping fast.
Realizing what Todd was trying to tell him, Michael began searching Todd‘s pockets and located the ring. He had seen the ring react with Todd’s head once before, so he carefully palmed the ring and brought it up against the back of Todd's head. Michael almost jerked his hand away as the connection between the ring and Todd’s implant sparked. Todd visibly shuddered and he took a deep breath. Larry listened to his heart as the beating returned to normal and his pulse rate slowed down.
“Todd, you need to stop. I insist. I won’t allow you to kill yourself. You’re still recovering from your head wound, your heart is on the edge of a full-blown heart attack and the implant left inside can also take you out. Is Hesser worth your life?” Even as he asked the question, Larry knew Todd’s answer.
“I’m staying. I’ll get through this. There isn’t much more to tell. The worst is over.” Todd raised his head and straightened his shoulders to prove he could finish his testimony.
Larry and Michael knew the argument was over. They stood up and nodded to Nora, Michael spoke. “He wants to finish. We’ll stay here if it’s alright with the court.” He looked toward the judge, who agreed.
Todd spoke to the courtroom. “My apologies to all, the last few months have been very trying and the attempt on my life by Christian Vega almost finished me. Samuel survived by taking off for Paris because he feared for his life even though he couldn’t figure out why. When his memory returned, he brought us home. Both he and I have struggled to get our memories of the time in the clinic straight and it is a painful process. The implants were two-fold, they could extract information, but they also were designed to keep the memories hidden. If the original owner of the information attempted to remember he was incapacitated by extreme pain. The kind of pain Samuel and I just experienced. You see, it turns out not all of my implants were removed.” Todd stopped talking, he knew what was coming next.
“Excuse me, I’m confused and I’m sure this court is too. You talk like you’re not Samuel Toddman. “
“I’m not.”
“You mean Samuel Toddman is the name you took when you had no memory of your real self.”
“No, I mean Samuel is one of my alters. When I almost died at the hands of Mitch Lawrence, Samuel was born. Samuel lived for me until I recovered sufficiently to retake my life.”
“If you’re not Samuel Toddman, then who are you?”
“I thought that was obvious by now, I’m Todd Manning.” Todd felt relieved he could finally lay claim to his name again.
You could have heard a pin drop at that moment. The shock factor of his announcement was palpable. Then all hell broke loose. John had just a moment to see the laser marker appear on Todd’s chest. He yelled, “Michael! Get him down.” He pulled his gun, as the shot just missed Todd, who was pushed quickly by Michael. More shots could be heard, and suddenly a woman screamed.
Todd was being held down by Larry when the scream carried over the other sounds in the room. Tea was screaming Blair’s name. Todd’s blood ran cold. He shook loose of Larry’s hold and staggered off the stand. Silence ruled in the courtroom now except for Tea’s sobbing.
“Blair, My God! Michael get me to her.” Todd was frantic. The crowd parted as Michael guided Todd to his wife. Larry joined them. Todd heard her moan near the floor and he dropped to his knees, he didn‘t need his sight to know it was her. Gathering her in his arms, he felt the wetness covering her blouse. “Oh god, he can’t do this to me, not again. Blair you‘ve got to hang in there. Larry’s right here.”
“Todd, you need to let me check her. Please.” Larry was trying to get Todd to loosen his hold. With Michael and John’s help, he was able to pry Todd loose and Larry began his examination. Larry opened her blouse to get a better look at the wound. Blood was pumping out fast and Larry knew a major artery had been hit. The EMTs, on standby for Todd, came into the room and Michael and Larry went to work on Blair trying to find and clamp the bleeding, but it soon became obvious that her heart must have been nicked, too. Todd had been listening to them work and could hear Blair’s breathing getting shallower. He got still and said in a quiet voice. “Michael, give me my ring.”
Michael had forgotten he still had it and reached into his pocket to pull it out and pressed it into Todd’s hand.
Todd felt the stickiness of Blair’s blood on the ring from Michael’s hands. He gulped and placed the ring on his finger, then looked down at his wife as his vision cleared. His breath caught at the sight of all the blood and one look at Larry’s face told the rest of the story.
“Todd, I’m so sorry. There’s nothing we can do.”
Todd shook his head and gently pulled her back into his arms. “I’m sorry Blair, I should have stayed away. This is all my fault.” He struggled to cover her with her blouse and Michael handed him a towel. He draped it carefully over her, there were too many prying eyes.
She opened her eyes and saw him looking down at her. Barely whispering, her breath getting thready, Blair spoke, “Shh, you didn’t do this... I urged you to come home. I love you and I wanted you back in my life.“ It was a struggle to get the words out and even more of a struggle to lift her arm, but she needed to touch him one last time. “My beautiful man,” gently her fingers found his scars. “You and me, always and forever.” She closed her eyes, and her hand dropped. A surge of pain went through him as he felt her heartbeat cease. His head was pounding, and in the background, the incessant beep was getting louder. He laid her down on the floor, and through tears and rage, he looked from right to left wildly for the man responsible. With steady steps, Todd walked toward Carlo.
Everyone was watching as Todd reached Carlo. “You did this. I warned you yesterday, I would see you pay for your crimes.” Before anyone could stop him, Todd had his hands around Carlo’s neck. The muscles in his hands spasmed and Todd’s grip became deadly. The implants that had caused everything, to begin with, were taking their own vengeance. Todd couldn’t stop his hands and didn’t want to. Pain shot through his whole body as his heart seized and he and Hesser toppled to the ground. People were yelling, but Todd was fading. He knew only one thing. Blair was dead and it looked like he would be joining her soon. He gave himself over to the pain, with nothing left to live for. He saw her moving away from him and with his dying breath, he called to her. “Blair.”

“Blair.”

Todd Manning: Enigma, Ch. 11
Chapter 11
Todd stood outside the room. “You idiot!” Todd slammed his fist against the wall. He shivered. God, the man was a snake. Cold anger infused him and he envisioned putting his hands around Ivan’s neck and squeezing the life out of him. Todd hated the uneasiness the man brought out in him. Todd’s head began to pound again, and he reached up with the ring easing the pain. Then he removed it and stowed it away. He had already had one incident with his heart and that was enough for one day. Todd began moving back toward the stairwell that would take him back to Bo’s office and a ride home.
***
Todd awoke on the edge. This was it, his chance to put Carlo and Ivan away for a very long time. Pete and Samuel had both been putting in their two cents worth since he had gotten back from his visit the previous day. His anger was barely in check and Pete had been stirring the fire. It had proven to be another restless night with more images of torture bombarding him. Todd faced the mirror and saw Pete and knew he was in for another argument.
“What’s the matter, Todd? Don’t want to admit you got a thrill yesterday? Man, you made them sweat. You were downright lethal.”
“Shut up Pete, I don’t want to go down that path. My anger got the best of me yesterday but I’ve got it back under control, and I’ve got you there too, so back off.” Todd splashed some cold water on his face. He knew Pete was right. Damn it, get a grip, Manning. He needed to keep it under wraps today. “Samuel you need to cover this as much as possible. I realize we’ve got an impossible task ahead of us, neither one of us really wants to talk about the experiments but I think you’ll be able to let the jury have a better understanding of what we went through than me.”
“I agree, Todd, but these headaches are beginning to worry me. Is Michael going to be on hand?”
“Samuel, no matter what happens, those implants are not going to stop me from testifying. I don’t care how bad the headaches get, I want the jury to know what Hesser and Kipling did to us. Michael and Larry both are supposed to be there, they have to testify too.”
Blair walked in and heard Todd talking; she listened and realize he was talking to one of his own alters. It was always a little unnerving to realize he communicated with them like they were ordinary people. She moved toward the bathroom and came up behind him. She smiled and caught his eye and his expression on seeing her made her heart flutter.
Todd met her eyes in the mirror, admiring her. She actually blushed at his gaze and he loved it. “Hi.”
“Hi yourself, you’d better get on the ball. The cops will be here shortly to get us.”
“What do you mean us?”
“If you think you’re going to that trial without me, you have another think coming. I’m going to be in that courtroom giving you whatever support I can. I’m meeting Tea. We’ve already gotten permission to be there from Nora. Besides, Tea is anxious to see Jake. She’ll have just a few minutes with him before he testifies.”
Todd started to protest as an image of Blair on Carlo’s lap with a gun to her chest popped into his head. Before he could say anything, he felt her fingers on his lips shushing him. Looking directly into her sparkling eyes he knew she wouldn’t stay away, so instead, he just drew her into a kiss.
Blair melted into his arms, tangling her fingers into his hair, his kiss was electrifying and tingled all through her. The man radiated passion and she molded her body to his. He had been so wary of giving his heart after having it stomped on by Rebecca. Now he only gave it to people he really cared about and Blair was the lucky one. He finally released her and she felt breathless. He had gotten still and when Blair looked in his eyes she knew he had gone somewhere else again. “Todd?”
Todd blinked coming out of his thoughts and back to Blair “I’m sorry, I’m afraid this trial is already distracting me and it hasn’t even started yet.”
Blair nodded, “Okay get ready I’ll see you downstairs.”
Todd watched her leave and finished what he had started. He was about ready to leave the room when Pete decided to pipe up again.
“You can’t ignore me. You know I’m right, pansy, and if you don’t admit it, you’re doing yourself more harm than good. I’m just a piece of that anger you’ve got hidden inside you. You better start asking yourself where I came from.“
Todd turned and walked back to the chair by the bed. He dropped into it and then took himself inside his head, enough was enough. Todd stared at Pete. “Okay, so I’m hiding from myself?”
Todd had come to fight and Pete wasn’t sure if fighting would really get through to him. “Hell yes. Hey, I know you hate the idea. Wake up. I’m here because of something you won’t admit. You like it. The danger, the anger, it’s exciting and gets your blood pumping. Admit it. That’s the "real" you.”
“Pete, you‘re just talking nonsense. I know I fractured because of Peter and what he did to me, but you guys are it. Why do you think there’s another me?” Todd couldn’t help himself he was getting cold just thinking about what Pete was saying.
“Open your ears, I didn’t say another you, I said the ‘real’ you. The one who confronted Hesser and Kipling, the one who wanted to get back at Marty. You know what I’m talking about.”
Todd bolted upright in the chair, his face ashen. “God no.” He covered his face. He had been so sure he had rid himself of it.
What’s the matter, Marty? We just want to party. You know you want it. Isn’t that, right? Powell locks the door.” She was beautiful and terrified. He relished the control he had over her. She was his for the taking and he intended to have her. Hell, she had thrown herself at him and then she had burned him, now he was giving her what she deserved.
Todd uncovered his face and walked to the bathroom, his steps a little unsteady. He reached the sink and saw the reality. He couldn’t let Pete take the blame any longer for his actions. He had done it and relished it; he had terrorized Nora, too. 'That Todd' still existed. Somehow the monster had now gotten loose and if Todd didn’t find a way to trap and destroy him permanently there was no telling what 'that Todd' might be capable of. One thing was sure, his monster didn’t feel love. Todd turned from the mirror. He steeled his resolve and tried to ignore the feelings raging through him. He was scared, and he couldn’t afford the fear going into this trial. He was also petrified that the monster might make an appearance at the trial and he had to make sure that didn’t happen. The jury needed to know the harm Carlo and Kipling had done, if they even so much as caught a glimpse of 'that Todd' it could turn their sympathy toward the defendants.
Todd made his way down to Blair and took the time to put on the vest than his jacket. When the doorbell rang he was surprised to see John waiting. “Why the extra service John?”
“Bo’s not taking any chances, We know a couple notes got out to certain parties last night after your visit. We just don’t know what was in them."
“But you think they’re trouble for me right?”
“We’re just not taking any chances. We need to go.”
They got away from Dragonheart without much trouble but Todd was quiet on the drive into town. He was lost in his thoughts about his earlier talk with Pete.”
John looked at Blair. “How’s he doing?”
Blair shrugged, she could sense something was bothering Todd. He had been withdrawn from the moment he had descended the stairs.
“Todd?” John waited for a response. It was obvious Todd wasn’t with them. He reached and tapped Todd “Hey Todd?”
Todd felt the tap and registered that John was trying to get his attention. Snap out of it Todd. He focused on John. “Sorry, my mind was elsewhere. What do you need John?”
“I wanted to tell you that Michael wants to have a quick talk with you before the trial starts. Nora insisted that one of your doctors also give you the once over too, so Larry will also be checking on you.”
Todd frowned. “Now she’s getting ridiculous, I’m fine. Does she think I’m gonna croak on the stand or something?” Todd looked at John and Blair and saw the concern on their faces. “You all really think I’m going to have a problem. There’s no way I’m not getting up on that witness stand no matter what the doctors say. So as far as I’m concerned it’s a wasted effort to even bother checking me out.”
“Don’t kill the messenger, Todd. I was just giving you a heads up.”
As they pulled up to the back entrance to the courthouse Todd noticed a Prison van sitting there. Obviously, Hesser and Kipling had been brought together from the county lockup. There was a guard sitting in the van and a chill ran through Todd. He knew the face. As they started to enter the building Todd pulled John aside.
“John, this is going to sound crazy, but I think there is a plan to break Hesser and Kipling out today.” Todd pulled John into a room and told him all about the escape attempt in his dream and the results. He told about recognizing the driver of the van from his dream and how Hesser used Blair as a shield. John listened and after delivering Todd to Michael, he left to see what he could dig up about the bailiff and the driver. If there was a chance Todd‘s dream was correct, he was going to stop it in its tracks.
The trial started without incident and opening statements were made leading to the prosecution beginning their case. After talking to the doctors and Police officers, it was time to pull out the key witnesses against the defense.
“Your Honor, I call Christian Vega to the stand.”
Hesser glared as Vega took the stand, he was one of the key witnesses against him because he had put the call out to Vega to get him back under control.
As Vega told his story of receiving a call in Paris with instructions to take out Todd Manning. He told how he waited to get Manning isolated and the opportunity arose the afternoon Manning took in a stop to talk to John McBain outside Rodi’s. “Poseidon ordered the hit. Unfortunately, McBain’s interference stopped the shot from being lethal and Manning ended up in a coma. I was ordered to bide my time and keep a watch on him. When Samuel Toddman arrived in town a couple other colleagues entered the town and attempted to take out Toddman but halted when they realized Toddman wasn’t a threat. Poseidon was furious with them and ordered their hits so I obliged.”
“Mr. Vega, you say that so nonchalantly, have you no remorse for your actions?” Nora was dismayed at the coldness Christian was displaying as he talked. and she realized he was never going to be the same man ever again.
“I would like to say I’m sorry, but I can't. I’m having a hard time feeling anything at all. The doctors tell me it’s because of the control of the implants. If that sounds cold there’s not much I can do about it. It’s a fact, I tried to kill Todd Manning. I feel nothing one way or the other about the act, I just did it.”
“Mr. Vega you also attempted to kill Samuel Toddman is that correct..”
“Yes.”
“He’s the husband of your partner Blair Cramer, didn’t that bother you?”
“Look, I was ordered to do a job, I did it. Blair didn’t figure into the equation.”
“One last question Mr. Vega. Who is Poseidon?’
“Carlo Hesser.”
“Mr. Vega you mentioned implants. Can you tell me where you got yours?”
“I’ve only been able to remember a small portion of my time in Hesser’s hands following my capture by him in 2003, but I do have some memories of the Doctor who programmed me.”
“Is he in this courtroom?”
“Yes, He’s sitting next to Carlo Hesser. It’s the man with the black hand.”
“Thank you, Mr. Vega. I have no more questions, Your Honor.”
The defense attorneys were unable to make much of a dent in Christian’s testimony because he was almost like an automaton. His answers were sharp and to the point but they couldn’t get a rise out of him. They finally gave up, they knew the jury believed him because he was so truthful. He was hiding nothing.
Blair watched and held onto Carlotta’s hand during Christian’s whole testimony. Carlotta had started weeping quietly during the testimony because she was heartbroken. The doctors had saved Chris’s life when they had removed the implants but his soul had been destroyed. Blair prayed with every fiber of her being, that Carlo and Kipling might someday experience some of the horrors they caused. The judge took a short recess before Nora called her next witness. Blair and Carlotta were met by Marshals assigned to protect Carlotta and Blair watched as they escorted her out of the courthouse. She was going to a safe house where she would be reunited with Christian. Going down the corridor Blair went to the room where Michael, Larry, and Todd were being kept. They were deep in discussion and it appeared to be getting heated.
“Todd I’m just saying, it isn’t really necessary for you to go through this. Christian’s testimony was pretty damaging. Larry and I agree that you’re taking a big risk if you attempt this today. Nora informed me you almost had another heart attack yesterday just because you tried to describe some events.”
“Nora just doesn’t want to endanger her case,” replied Todd he felt he was beginning to be ganged up on. “You both are on hand. I have confidence you won’t let me die.”
“Todd be reasonable. If your heart acts up again we might not be able to stop the attack in time.” Larry could tell he was just wasting his words. Todd was going through with his testimony. “Blair talk some sense into your husband.”
“I’ve long since given up trying to talk Todd into anything, Larry. This is something he needs to do, so I suggest you take all the precautions you need to make sure I don’t lose him.” Blair walked over and supported her husband giving him a quick kiss. She was rewarded with a smile. Just then, the officer guarding the room announced the court was back in session. She squeezed his hand and left to go take her place in the courtroom again.
Larry decided to take those precautions and called the hospital and arranged for an ambulance to be sent to the courthouse, to standby, in case there was an emergency.
Blair had just gotten settled again when Tea joined her. They looked at each other and clasped hands. The court was called back to order and Nora arose to call her next witness.
“The prosecution calls Todd Manning to the stand.”
Todd stood outside the room. “You idiot!” Todd slammed his fist against the wall. He shivered. God, the man was a snake.
